All the outdoor clothing donated to Gift Your Gear in all the Rohan Shops during March has been sorted and dispatched to the beneficiary groups. This summer will see the gear back where it belongs on the hills with the young people from the Gift Your Gear beneficiary groups. The volume and quaintly of the donated gear was excellent. So many generous acts. It is impossible to list them all.
I am really mindful when I am sorting the gear that each and every one has a story to tell. Places visited, shared time with friends, holidays, expeditions, special trips.
Each one could tell a story.
These are just a few…
The tan coloured jacket donated at Rohan Kingston by the lady that made the jacket herself. It is a lovely jacket, Sleek and has a certain grace. Thank you.
The red Super Striders from Candida. The words Super Striders always grabs my interest. Add the colour Red and it is heightened. We only made a few in Red back in the day. Candida’s original message:
“I own a pair of women’s red stretch breeches, I think they were called Winter Striders. Bought at Long Preston in the early 80’s.
For some reason I’ve always believed they were a sample. Certainly the fabric not the same as my then boyfriend’s (husband of 30+years ) winter striders.
Sadly I can no longer wear them, and I’m looking for a good home for them! Any thoughts?”
Candida was almost right. There were very few made. She kindly agreed to pop into her nearest Rohan Shop, which coincidentally was Rohan Kingston and donated them to Gift Your Gear. In her own words:
“Cutting it fine, but I’m taking my vintage red Striders into Kingston upon Thames shop this afternoon.Hope you can pick up their trail! It would be fun to find out where they end up.
Attached is a pic of me in them ( tho you can’t really see, what with matching red gaiters and the distance.Might be an olive green Rohan ‘pullover’ top as well? Can’t remember what they were called, but I had a couple and really loved them. Nearing the top. Probably January 1984!
The trail has been picked up. I am going to trace this donation right through the process. So we will all be able to enjoy the history from purchase in 1984 to use on the Cumbrian hills by a young person in 2015. The Super Striders were collected by Jon from Brathay Trust at the Gift Your Gear depot. The van left the depot full of donations.
A really big thank you to Candida and Jon for helping to make this happen.
A couple of other highlights
Big Kids Suit that looked just like this one. But I understand it’s not his.
The volume of other brands donated was very large. With strong representation from Berghaus, Craghoppers, Regatta, Patagonia, Paramo and Mountain Equipment. Even a G&H Cagjac first made in 1973. Remember them? If you are interested in the history of waterproofs you will love this it includes the G&H story. Not forgetting the many lovely rucksacks and day sacks donated.
Finally a big thank you from everyone at Rohan for making this Gift Your Gear the best yet.
Until next time.
